What to Expect During Your Visit

Most people who walk through our door have never sold a coin in their life. If that is you, you are in good company, and there is nothing here to be nervous about.

Arizona Coin & Bullion walk-in appraisal counter with coin evaluation tray, digital scale, optical loupe, and friendly expert consultation
Our walk-in appraisal counter: sit face-to-face with an experienced numismatist while your coins, bullion, or jewelry are sorted, weighed, and evaluated in plain view.

You do not need an appointment, you do not need to know what anything is, and you do not need to have it organized. We would honestly rather you didn't organize it. Bring it just the way you found it and let us do the sorting.

We are not a pawn shop, and we are not an online mail-in service. You sit right across the counter with us, you watch every step, and you leave with everything you brought unless you choose to sell.

What happens, step by step

  1. You show us what you have

Tip the bag out on the counter. A shoebox, a binder, a coffee can, a drawer of odd earrings. We have seen all of it and none of it is silly.

  2. We sort it in front of you

The first pass separates the things worth more than their metal from the things worth their metal. This is the part that matters most, and it is the part a scale-only buyer skips.

  3. We test anything we are unsure of

Gold and jewelry go on the XRF analyzer, which reads the real composition in seconds without scratching or filing anything. The screen faces you.

  4. We tell you what it is worth

Out loud, item by item, including the things we would tell you to keep. If something is worth more at auction than we would pay, we say so.

  5. You decide, or you do not

There is no close and no pitch. If you want to think about it, take our number and go home. Plenty of people do, and plenty come back months later.

How long it takes

A handful of coins takes ten minutes. A shoebox takes half an hour. A full estate collection can take an afternoon, and if it is genuinely large we would rather book a quiet time than rush it between walk-ins.

If you are bringing something substantial, a quick phone call ahead means the right person is at the counter when you arrive. That is the only reason to call first.

One thing before you come in

Please do not clean anything. Polishing a collectible coin can wipe out most of its value in seconds, and that damage can never be undone. Tarnish, tone, and dust are completely normal. Here is why.

What to bring

  • Whatever you want valued, in whatever container it lives in
  • Photo ID if you think you may sell — Arizona law requires it for precious metal purchases
  • Any paperwork that came with the items, such as certificates or old receipts, if you happen to have it
  • Nothing else. No inventory list, no research, no prices from the internet

Questions people ask at the counter

Do I have to sell if I come in?

No. The evaluation is free and it stays free whether you sell us everything, some of it, or none of it.

Will you tell me if something is worth keeping?

Yes, and we do it regularly. We would rather you kept a coin that is about to appreciate than sold it to us cheaply and felt badly about it later.

What if I only have one thing?

Bring it. One coin is a perfectly normal reason to walk in, and it gets the same attention as a full collection.

Can I bring my collection if I inherited it and know nothing about it?

That is the most common visit we get. You do not need to know anything at all. We will walk you through what is in front of you.

Come in when it suits you

Walk-ins all day, free parking behind the building, and no appointment required. If you would rather talk first, the phone goes straight to our showroom.
